PES Theatre Presents:

I HATE HAMLET

by Paul Rudnick

Directed by Kevin L. Ash

Synopsis:  Andrew Rally seems to have it all:  celebrity and acclaim for his starring role in a hit tv series; a rich, beautiful girlfriend; a glamorous, devoted agent; the perfect New York apartment; and the chance to play Hamlet in Central Park.  There are, however, a couple of glitches in paradise.  Andrew’s series has been cancelled; his girlfriend is clinging to her virginity with unyielding conviction; and he has no desire to play Hamlet.  When Andrew’s agent reminisces about her brief romance many years ago in Andrew’s apartment with John Barrymore, a séance is performed to summon his ghost.  Hilarity ensues as Barrymore returns, in high Shakespearean garb, to coach Andrew through the role of a lifetime – Hamlet.  The laughs are nonstop as Andrew wrestles with his conscience, Barrymore, his sword, and the fact that he fails as Hamlet in Central Park.

Characters:

ANDREW RALLY -  A television actor, handsome and charming with a touch of ego. He is used to being the center of attention. He could easily glide through life, wafting on a cloud of good looks and affability. Andy undergoes the biggest change of all the characters. Enamored of Deirdre and foil to Barrymore.

FELICIA DANTINE - Real estate agent with a passion for Manhattan apartments. Energetic, jubilant, zest for life. Dresses flamboyantly. Conducts the séance in Act I, runs off with Gary in Act II.

DEIRDRE McDAVEY  - Andrew’s girlfriend. She is enthusiastic. She is always on the verge of a swoon. She is irresistibly appealing and prone to flights of fancy.

LILLIAN TROY - Andrew’s agent. German dialect. She is elegant and classy. Once had an affair with John Barrymore in this same apartment.

JOHN BARRYMORE - The ghost of the famous American actor. He is summoned during the séance by Andrew’s subconscious. He is a ghost with a mission: to coach another Hamlet. He lives up to his reputation of the sexy, dashing, romantic hero.

GARY PETER LEFKOWITZ - Personifies LA chic. Fast talking, fast moving, ADD personified. He is an extremely happy, overgrown child with shameless exuberance. Reality is of very little consequence, the deal is all. The audience should find him appalling and appealing.

In this fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza, Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big  imagination--Jojo. "Oh, the Thinks You Can Think" captures the show's spirit of imagination, as the colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.

The story centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge--not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him, the only one who recognizes "his kind and his powerful heart." Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant, in a story that makes you laugh and cry.
