School’s out for summer Parish celebrates year’s successes June 2, 2008 Most of Parish Episcopal's kindergartners through the Class of '08 aren't all that familiar with the 1972 Alice Cooper blockbuster song.
But the music was blaring and they were singing the song as they left school for their first day of summer. All of Parish's students were out May 29. The school experienced one of its most successful ever while celebrating only its second graduating class.
Parish started expanding to include a high school five years ago and now has nearly 1,200 students through 12th grade. The students passed several milestones through the school year.
Parish had its first student-directed play with an offering of "Steel Magnolias" in the winter and a spring musical of "Footloose." Parish students' community service accomplishments included collecting more than 12,000 jars of peanut butter as part of the national television show, "Oprah's Big Give."
Gloria Snyder, head of school at Parish since 1980, received one of the highest honors of the National Association of Episcopal Schools. At a November conference coming next November in Tampa, Fla., she will receive the Ruth Jenkins Award which recognizes outstanding service.
In athletics, Parish won a second-consecutive TAPPS state girls swimming title and senior Alex Henderson defended his 200-meter state track title. Parish reached the TAPPS state tournament in volleyball, girls basketball and boys soccer. The Panthers won their first state playoff football game and advanced to the quarterfinals of state softball and reached a first-ever regional tournament in golf.
Parish's Class of '08 will have its Most Outstanding senior, Cozette Kale, go to Vanderbilt. Other students will attend colleges ranging from Texas, Auburn, Northwestern, Scripps College in California and three to service academies (Navy, Air Force and Merchant Marine.)
