Matching Gifts add to Annual Fund total
Each year the Matching Gift Programs at many of the companies for which our parents work provide added dollars to our Annual Fund Campaign. 2006-2007 was no exception as we received over $60,000 in match donations and pledges. This total includes gifts based on actual matching dollars donated and gifts based on volunteer hours. In addition, Parish received technology items from IBM and Hewlett-Packard, through “special purchase discounts”.
The gifts Parish receives are generally four types, as listed below.
1. Matching gifts:
The company matches the dollar amount donated, usually at a 1-1 ratio, but at times greater.
2. Volunteer service hour gifts:
An employee can submit their volunteer hours to their company; the company then makes a monetary gift to the designated school on behalf of that employee in honor of their service.
**This program can be used to enhance a dollar gift. Some companies that match a dollar gift will then match that gift again based on the employee’s or the employee’s spouse’s service hours. Please consult your company to see if they sponsor a volunteer service hour gift program.
3. Special purchase discounts:
The company, typically technology based, allows the employee to “purchase” items needed by the school at a cost ratio usually about 4-to-1. In these instances the employee/parent works with our technology department to identify the school’s needs such as computers, printers or digital cameras. The employee then gives the cash amount to their company to “purchase” the items at the discounted amount, and the items are delivered to the school.
Example: A gift of $500 by the employee/parent benefits the school by providing technology equipment valued at $2,000 to $2,500.
4. Grants:
Some employers have a foundation that bequeaths gifts to organizations/schools in honor of their employees. In these instances the employee/parent requests that a gift be made to a charitable organization, and the company will give a gift on behalf of the employee. Usually these gifts are limited to certain kinds of organizations, and the amount of the gift is determined by an employee’s number of years with the company.
We encourage each of you to contact your company’s Human Resource Department to inquire about their participation in such matching programs. We will assist you in any way necessary to apply for these programs in hopes of matching the gift you have already given to the 2006-2007 Parish Annual Fund.
