Second Grade Update

Dear Family,

Your child will use the Spelling Connections program this year. Each week, the lesson will focus on a Spelling Strategy that describes a common spelling rule or principle. The spelling words on the list for that week will illustrate the Spelling Strategy.

You can help your child succeed by spending time at home each week examining and writing the spelling words together. Make a game of spelling practice. Many simple games such as “Tic-Tac-Toe,” “I Spy,” and “Simon Says” can be adapted to include spelling words.

The Spelling Study Strategy is a method for studying any spelling word. Help your child make a habit of using it for spelling practice. Follow these steps:

1. Look at the word.

2. Say the letters in the word. Think about how each sound is spelled.

3. Cover the word with your hand or close your eyes.

4. See the word in your mind. Spell the word to yourself.

5. Write the word.

6. Check your spelling against the spelling in the book.

*****A Spelling Packet will come home with your child each week. The contents of this packet are due back on Thursday of that week.
